Discuss! The rift between the sections predated Lincoln's appearance on the scene, and he often said he didn't want to upset the applecart or change the staus quo, he merely wanted to contain slavery and prevent it expanding as the nation pushed westwards. It was the southern 'hotheads' who started the ball rolling and created a rebellion. They were fearing the worst when the worst was not being threatened. Truth to tell they were a minority and didn't like seeing democracy eroding their power and influence. I feel obliged to defend Lincoln, he was a great guy. Billy. |
