July, 1864 - Georgia

Impression: Co.C, 27th Alabama Infantry (Col.James Jackson), Scott's Brigade (Consisting of the 27th, 35th, 49th,55th and 57th Alabama & 12th Louisiana), Lorings Division, A.P.Stewart's Corps, Army of Tennessee.
Dress should be as for AoT for this period as set out in the LJ impression guidelines (esp: Columbus Depot or Dept of Alabama Jackets, or Civilian Dress -- no RDIIs of at all possible)

Rations: Per Man: 6-8" wide slice of Salt Pork Belly or raw Beef, cornbread cakes or corn meal, 1 serving of filed peas (black eyed peas), goober peas, apples, Luxury goods sent from home should be limited. There should be very little -- only what we have traded. Chicoree syrup ('Camp Coffee') recommended. Pipesmoking & baccy chewing encouraged.

Scenario: You are a member of Company C 27th Alabama reincorporated earlier this year into the Army of Tennessee after detached duty over the winter in Mississippi. We come from Lauderdale County (county town of Florence). We enlisted in December 1861 though by now a few of us are conscripts. We have had a hard time of it. We were at the Fort Donnelson surrender. We were paroled in time for Perryville. In 1863 we participated in the Vicksburg Campaign and got seperated from Pemberton's main body at the Battle of Champion Hill (with the rest of Loring's command). We then became part of Johnson's Army of the Relief and spent most of the remainder of the Summer futiley contemplating the relief of Vicksburg. After establishing winter camps in Canton (Miss) and then Dalton we then joined the retreat to Resacca where we dug in.
In recent months we have been engaged in the Atlanta Campaign which has ammounted to a demoralising repetition of flank marches and retreats, punctuated by some hard fighting. Friday (18th) finds us north-west of Atlanta, not far from the railroad, just south of the Peach Tree Creek along which Federal troops are massing. By now, news has arrived of Johnson's dismissal and Hood's appointment as commander of the Army of Tennessee. Men wait with baited breath to see what will result from the change,....
By the time we pack away on Sunday (20th) we would have just been entering combat. Union General Thomas recorded the day's action thus:

HEADQUARTERS ARMY OF THE CUMBERLAND,
July 20, 1864 - 6:15 p. m.
Maj. Gen. W. T. SHERMAN,
Commanding Military Division of the Mississippi:
GENERAL:
The enemy attacked me in full force at about 4 p. m., and
has persisted until now, attacking very fiercely, but he was repulsed
handsomely by the troops all along my line. Our loss has been heavy,
but the loss inflicted upon the enemy has been very severe. We have
taken many prisoners, and General Ward reports having taken 2 stand
of colors. I cannot make at present more than this general report, but
will send you details as soon as I can get them from my corps commanders.
