Isn't that where some poor chap was mistaken for an elephant and got shot?
Must have been due to poor visibility, what with all that rain 'n all. Jim. |

No, no Jim, surely they were going to 'see the elephant'?
If this poor chap was shot for looking like an elephant (he must have been a big bugger,) then why didn't everyone go home, cos there would have been no elephant to see? All very strange. If I'd have been there, I'd have ignored the so-called 'elephant' and gone looking for the 'Monkey Show' which apparently could be found on a battlefield. Nobby |

Antietam, I think some General said they couldent hit an elephant at this distance and after that promptly fell from his horse, I think that was near a cornfield where a Texas regiment was surprised by Federal Infantry while out for breakfast..I have a mental map of the battlefield.
And yeah 1864 spotsylvania, olny diary entry I have just mentions rain and the poor visabillity between the firering lines..later it describes a lack of such. ofcourse i'm probally wrong |

Quote: I have a mental map of my arse, but I still can't find it in the dark, even using both hands and a flashlight, (but that's only to be expected from a cavalryman). Jim. PS. Stu, try googling 'Sedgwick & Spotsylvania' mate. |

They certainly had a few spots at Spotsylvania. -It came down with the buckets, though not everyday, just when they were having some vicious hand to hand across the breastworks.
Sedgewick is the elephant general, and he made his famous last remark at Spots. Very unfortunate. Don't think it rained at Anteitem. (Battle weather reports - a new thread.) Andy. |
