I have to say that I do find that story far more believable than the one where he's supposed to have hauled the guy up onto the horse behind him. But lifting him off the ground by the scruff of his neck would actually make sense, I can picture that one. That young Federal feller must have been soiling his britches some by the time old Forrest dropped him!

That's a stunt you'll see a lot in the movies, and like all horse stunts, they make it look easy, but it's a lot harder to do than it looks. And that's even when both participants are willing, which I'm guessing that young Federal feller was definitely not!

The skirmish took place at Fallen Timbers as Forrest's rearguard were approached by 77th Ohio skirmishers under the direct command of Billy Sherman. The skirmishers fired too quickly, formed 'Guard Against Cavalry' in a battle line and were shotgunned at close range by Forrest's mounted men.
